Frequently asked questions

What is Kovax Tolecut used for?
Tolecut is an ultra-fine stick-on abrasive sheet used for precise defect removal on paint: nibs and dust inclusions in fresh paint, small runs, and isolated deep scratches where machine polishing alone will not level the surface. The sheets stick to a Toleblock so the abrasive stays flat and controlled rather than following your fingertips. This is a refinishing tool, so it is used before compounding, not instead of it.
Do I need the Toleblock as well as the sheets?
Yes, and it is not optional in practice. The block keeps the abrasive flat so you cut only the high spot you are targeting instead of digging a hollow around it, which is exactly what happens with finger pressure. The S block is for small, tight defects and the M block covers slightly larger areas. The Tolecard is the flexible alternative for curved surfaces. The Tolekit bundles blocks, sheets and cards together.
Is this safe to use on my own car?
It is a professional refinishing process and it removes clear coat, so treat it accordingly. Anyone using it needs to know their paint thickness, which means a paint depth gauge rather than guesswork, and needs to be able to compound and refine the sanded area back to gloss afterwards. Used without those two things, it will leave a dull patch that is worse than the original defect. If in doubt, have a professional do it.
What grades are available and which do I need?
Tolecut is supplied in colour-coded ultra-fine grades intended to be used in sequence, working from the coarsest that levels the defect down to the finest before you move to compound. Which one you start with depends entirely on the defect and the paint, which is why the kit approach makes sense: you step down through grades rather than trying to pick one. Always finish with the finest grade before compounding.
